Tzvetan Todorov's Theory
Todorov believes that there are five stages to the majority of narratives, this could be in films or music videos.
The first stage is a state of equilibrium (neutral/ balanced) where the characters are introduced and the audience are able to understand the location/ setting. This is true for the narrative in our music video because the audience will first of all establish who Scarlett is and how she is reminiscing on her past with her ex boyfriend.
Stage number two is when the equilibrium is disrupted or disturbed. At the start of our music video Scarlett and her ex boyfriend have already broken up, however there are shots of him and his new girlfriend together which could be a disruption but the main one is when you see Scarlett and her ex arguing and breaking up later on in our music video.
The third stage is when the character realises there has been a disruption. Scarlett realises that she is starting to miss her boyfriend because the lyrics and the music video narrative and performance is a reflection on her past and the realisation hits her when she sees her ex boyfriend with a new girlfriend in the park where they use to hang out and share memories.
The fourth stage is when the character tries to mend the disruption and do something about it. This does not apply to our music video because she notices that she has lost him but doesn't do anything to change the situation and when he calls her at the end of the music video she hovers over the hang up button because she doesn't want to get hurt again.
Todorov's final stage is closure and back to a neutral balance like at the beginning. This is true to our music video narrative because by hanging up on him she realises that no good will ever come to the relationship and that she needs to move on and as much as it hurts her she is happy that she made the right choice and the state of equilibrium is back to a neutral balance like at the start of the music video.
I will upload images of our final music video showing these four stages that apply to our music video later on.
